Tigers up to the Task in Johns Cup

Updated: March 15, 2019

The Greater Northern Tigers have won three out of four Andrew Johns Cup games but their season will be on the line when they play a must-win game against the Northern Rivers Titans this weekend.

Greater Northern Andrew Johns Cup Coach Steve Haylen affirmed his team needs to complete more sets and focus on keeping things simple after their 26-12 loss to the North Coast Bulldogs in Round Four.

“We’ve been a bit hit and miss this season – we’ve stuck to our plan on some occasions and others we haven’t,” Haylen said.

“We got three wins straight up, which obviously, we were pretty happy with because we could keep working to get better from there.

“Last week we had a bit of a meltdown and didn’t stick to what we know and got outclassed by North Coast, who we probably should have beaten.

“They threw a bit more football at us and made it hard for us to comeback from 14-0 down at half time.”

Players that have been putting in outstanding performances in Haylen’s eyes include Captain Jock Brazel, Campbell Watchirs, Scott Dickson and Mark Simon; Haylen will be relying on these players to help the team start well against the Northern Rivers Titans on the weekend.

“The team know that we have to win and I said to the them ‘you can either come in with a negative attitude or be really positive so let’s do the latter’.

“They know they’re playing against a team that’s classy and I’ll be interested to see how they aim up for that as well.

“I just hope we start well and then the boy’s confidence will build on top of that.”

The Andrew Johns and Laurie Daley Cup Greater Northern Tigers v Northern Rivers Titans matches will take place at Bellevue Oval, Armidale on Saturday, 16th March; with matches kicking off at 10:00am and 11:20am.

Both matches will be live streamed via the CRL Facebook Page.
