North West Youth League launched in Castlereagh and Group 4 Rugby League
Country Rugby League, in consultation with Castlereagh and Group 4 Rugby League, has approved the formation of an exciting new U18s competition, aimed at fostering youth in the North West of Regional NSW.
Whilst maintaining traditional U18s competition’s within their respective Group boundaries, management has formulated the new “North West Youth League” which will see each U18s side from Castlereagh and Group 4 Rugby League play each other once throughout the season; with the best performed sides from each competition facing off in a Final to be played in July.
The combined competition will comprise of eight teams from Castlereagh and Group 4 Rugby League including Coonabarabran, Baradine, Gilgandra, Gulgong, Collegian, Narrabri, North Tamworth and Gunnedah.
Western Rams Regional Area Manager Peter Clarke believes the new competition is a great initiative for both regions.
“The main purpose of the North West Youth League is to provide the young men from Castlereagh and Group 4 with more opportunities to play Rugby League,” Clarke said.
“Both regions only have a small number of sides in the U18s division and the new competition allows them to play a larger number of games throughout the season as well as test themselves against teams from neighbouring areas that they wouldn’t normally play.”
Where practical, North West Youth League games have been scheduled alongside Castlereagh and Group 4 competition games and allocated on weekends where respective clubs have a bye or no football in their local competitions.
Greater Northern Regional Area Manager Scott Bone hopes the new competition will assist in attracting and retaining players in the U18 age-group across both competitions.
“By offering more opportunities for these guys to play, we’re making it more attractive to be involved in the game,” Bone said.
“It’s great to see the regions working together to offer our participants new opportunities and I’m looking forward to seeing the new competition get underway.”
The North West Youth League will kick-off on Saturday, 8th of April at Baradine with a triple header featuring – Barradine v Gunnedah, Collegian v Gilgandra and North Tamworth v Gulgong.
