Experienced gained in the CRL Women’s Nines has the Newcastle Knights ready to contest the Tarsha Gale Cup Grand Final against the Cronulla Sharks at Leichhardt Oval this weekend.

Having qualified for the decider in their inaugural season, Knights Coach Josh Potapczyk believes the experience of having all team members play in the Central Coast-Hunter and Group 21 CRL Women’s Nines has been a great benefit for his side.

“The Nines has been enormously important in terms of giving them game experience,” Said Potapczyk.

“We had many girls with a touch football, Oz Tag or soccer background before the Nines competition was introduced.

“It was a fantastic opportunity for the club to see what sort of skill level was already out there and to look to develop that skill and take it to the next level, like we have this year.”

Having witnessed the benefit of the new pathways being created for Women’s Rugby League, Potapczyk believes the introduction of the CRL Central Hunter Combined Women’s Competition; which features over 700 players competing across Under-14, 16, 18 and Open-Age divisions – will help to set the standard for the Tarsha Gale Cup moving forward.

“I think the new tackle competition is only adding to everything we have achieved so far… to firstly increase the size of the talent pool we have to look at and select from.

“Most importantly, it’s giving girls the opportunity to come and experience the game, many for the first time.

“I think having that competition for the region is hugely beneficial for the development of Women’s Rugby League.

“In combination with that, having the women’s NRL competition launch is giving a lot of younger girls an insight into what might be possible in the future –  that they can look forward to representing an NRL club on a national level as well.”
