Narooma Devils Junior Teig Wilton will be aiming to secure NSW a seventh-straight Under-20’s State of Origin victory when the Blues take on the Maroons in the curtain-raiser to State of Origin Three on Wednesday night.

Wilton, one of six Country players named in the squad, admits he is excited for the challenge of taking on the Maroons once again after representing the Blues in the Under-18’s last year.

“It’s definitely a great honour,” Wilton said.

“It feels awesome; I can’t wait to get out there and put the Blues jersey on and represent my state and my home town of Narooma.”

Wilton has enjoyed a meteoric rise through the Rugby League pathways after representing Greater Southern in the CRL Country Championships and NSW Country in 2016; before helping Cronulla reach the Grand Final in the Under-18’s SG Ball competition in 2017.

Wilton, who is currently enjoying his time as a member of the Cronulla Sharks Jersey Flegg side,  believes the CRL pathway played an important role in his development as a player.

“The pathways helped me heaps, especially going through the ranks; it exposed me to a high-level football and a bit of a professional atmosphere.

“When I made the Country teams and we toured New Zealand and Perth it gave me a good taste of what it takes to be playing at high level and good exposure to that kind of system.”

Hoping to one day join the likes of Boyd Cordner, David Klemmer and Jake Trbojevic in progressing from the Under-20’s to the Blues State of Origin side; Wilton’s focus is on continuing to improve his football each week and to enjoy his time with his Sharks teammates for the remainder of the season.

“I want to play my best for the NSW team. Going forward, I just want to play good footy for my club, the Cronulla Sharks and continue to better myself every week.”

“Every week is a good challenge; it’s a strong competition so it’s really enjoyable.”

The New South Wales v Queensland Under-20’s match will be held at Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane, on Wednesday, 11th July; with the match kicking-off at 5.15pm
