The League Tag Championships kick-off in Glen Innes and Yass this weekend and Yanco-Wamoon Hawks representative Tess Staines is excited about the new format.

The fullback was part of the Country Championship-winning Riverina Bulls tackle side and went on to represent NSW Country at the National Championships and NSW in the Under-18’s Women’s Origin and says Saturday will be an entertaining hit out between the Southern regions.

“I’m keen to verse our neighbouring regions again, we normally get a few little encounters with them throughout the year so this will be another one of them,” Staines said.

“It’ll be a challenge playing three tough games in a row and I think a fair bit of endurance and fitness will come into play towards the end.

“I’m also very excited I get to play the sport that got me everywhere to start with.

“I’ve been playing Opens Tag since I was 12 so this will be my sixth year.

“I played with the boys when I was younger but stopped at Under-10’s because I was knee-high to a grass hopper, so Mum and Dad made the executive decision to pull me out.

“Then I went to League Tag and played with our local club – the Yanco-Wamoon Hawks and have been there ever since.”

file-32CRL have introduced an Under-16’s as well as an Opens division this year and Staines believes this will be of benefit to the next generation of female League Tag players.

“Most definitely, it was always extremely hard being that young to try and bite in to the seniors and try and get yourself a position.

“For some of the younger girls coming through its good to have that confidence booster and another little level for them before they get to the big league.”

Despite not having a tackle competition in the Riverina area, the Bulls took out this year’s maiden Women’s Tackle Country Championship title and Staines believes there is plenty more talent to unearth in the region.

“We won the Country Championships without even having a competition so that in itself is showing what we can broadcast out here and what we can do when we’re given the opportunity.”

The CRL Under-16’s and Opens League Tag Championships will kick-off on Saturday, 20th July in Yass and Glen Innes from 11:00am.
