Clayton Cup
Clayton Cup
The Clayton Cup has been awarded to the best team each year in the Country Rugby League since 1937. Reub Clayton had grown up with Chris McKivat in Orange and was a famous figure in that western town as a player and administrator before Rugby League was established. He lent his support to the new code and went on to be a Vice President of the NSWRL and a member of the Country Committee, which oversaw the running of football in the bush prior to the establishment of the CRL in 1934. Clayton, who was also a successful businessman (he was a bookmaker), donated the trophy to help foster the game in rural NSW and should never be forgotten for the part he played in establishing rugby league outside Sydney. Reub Clayton died in 1947
Tweed Heads Seagulls have won the cup three times (1963, 1983, 1989), and Forster-Tuncurry (1994, 1995, 2000) and three clubs have won it twice: Young (1953, 1955), Cobar (1971, 1972), Tumbarumba (1985, 1986).
