Country representative Mel Howard will line up for the Sydney Roosters in the first round of the NRLW season this weekend and she is excited to make her mark in her inaugural game for tri-colours.

Having played with the St George Illawarra Dragons last year, Howard says she has been enjoying the change at the Roosters with six of her CRL Newcastle team mates and is looking forward to the challenge of facing the Warriors.

“It’s really good,” Howard said.

“A lot less travel time, which is nice.

“We’re in a good routine with our car pool and we’re really enjoying a fresh start with some new faces; it’s been great.

“I’m super excited for this weekend, a little bit nervous about the big girls; hopefully they steer clear of me but I can’t wait to play.”

Howard was part of the NSW Country team that competed in the Women’s National Championships in June and played alongside the likes of Ruan Sims and Kirra Dibb and says she is eager to work with them again, along with some new faces.

“Tallisha Harden from Queensland.

“I’ve played against her a couple of times but she’s my second-rower tomorrow and I’ve really enjoyed getting on with her and forming a bit of combination at training so hopefully that comes off in the game.”

This season, the CRL Newcastle team that plays in the NSWRL Harvey Normal Women’s premiership won the Grand Final against Mounties with Rick Stone at the helm and the halfback says working under him and Kylie Hilder as Assistant Coach at the Roosters has been beneficial.

“Obviously, we would like to win again like we did with CRL Newcastle but I think if we can take the momentum from that team into NRLW then we should do okay.

“It feels like normal for us, having those familiar faces has made it a pretty easy transition and we knew a few of the girls already.”

The NRLW Round One Sydney Roosters v New Zealand Warriors game will be played on Saturday, 14th September at AAMI Park and will kick-off at 3:05pm live on Channel 9 and Fox Sports.
