Country Rugby League has teamed up with the NSW Office of Sport to promote positive sideline behavior at junior sporting events through Shoosh for Kids Week.

Running from 15 to 21 May, Country Rugby League will be joined by six major codes in encouraging their clubs to support the cause and help to create a positive environment for junior participants in grassroots sport; whilst addressing issues which arise from poor sideline behavior including – abuse to officials, reduced volunteer numbers and reduced participation rates.

CRL CEO Terry Quinn believes Shoosh for Kids Week provides an opportunity to send a consistent message to everyone involved in grassroots sport.

“The campaign reminds people of all ages to bring their best behaviour to children’s sport and to remember that it’s all about the kids having a positive and encouraging experience,” said Quinn.

“There’s no place in our game, or any other game, for negative comments directed at players and officials and it’s great to see the codes working together to put an end to this.”

Shoosh for Kids was introduced by Newcastle Junior Rugby League in 2015 and grew to encompass Illawarra Junior Rugby League and multiple sporting bodies throughout the Mid-West region in 2016.

Office of Sport Chief Executive Matt Miller hopes the campaign will help to ensure that all players’ officials and spectators have a positive experience in sport.

“We want everyone, especially children, to continue their involvement in sport because it’s a fun and encouraging environment for everyone,” said Miller.

“Most people do the right thing. However, the sports we are working with want to remind spectators that there is no place for negative comments in local sport,” Mr Miller said.

Winter sports supporting Shoosh for Kids Week in 2017 include Country Rugby League, AFL NSW/ACT, Basketball NSW, Football NSW, Hockey NSW, Netball NSW and NSW Rugby Union.
