Country Rugby League is teaming up with NSW Health to encourage junior players to add healthy snacks to their post-match routines.

NSW Health’s Finish with the Right Stuff program is being rolled out to junior rugby league clubs and associations across the state to encourage players to refuel with healthy food and water after they’ve sweated it out for a match or training session.

Program ambassador, Australian Jillaroo and Golden Boot winner Isabelle Kelly said Finish with the Right Stuff was great way for kids to learn about the importance of healthy food choices.

“As a professional athlete it’s important to be making healthy eating choices after playing and training and it’s no different for kids playing sport,” she said.

The program is part of the NSW Government’s Healthy Eating Active Living Strategy with Clubs to receive resources and support to help reinforce the Finish with the Right Stuff message to their players and sporting community.

Kelly helped spread the healthy eating message during a recent visit to the Dubbo Magpies Junior Rugby League club.

“The kids in our club like to eat healthy food so they feel good and have a lot of energy to run around and play the game they love. A balanced diet helps with a better performance and Dubbo Magpies think it is important to provide a healthy menu to kids and adults.”  club member Milissa Mcguire said.

NSW Health’s Executive Director for Population Health Jo Mitchell said tucking into healthy foods after sport ensures kids finish their match days or training sessions on a winning note.

“With the right fuel, kids stay healthy and perform their best,” she said.

“Once the game is over, it’s very easy for all their hard work to come undone by eating unhealthy food and drinking soft drinks.”

Finish With The Right Stuff has supported over 300 junior community sports clubs across NSW to make water and healthier food choices available for children and club patrons.
