CRL Central Hunter Women’s 9’s Return in 2018

Updated: August 28, 2018

The CRL Central Hunter Women’s 9’s will return bigger and better in October with over 80 teams expressing their interest to participate in the six-week competition.

The addition of Under-12’s to the existing Under-14/16/18 and Open-Age divisions; has been at the forefront of the increase with Newcastle, Central Coast, Maitland and Group 21 all anticipated to field sides in the competition.

After the overwhelming success of competitions held throughout Regional NSW last season, the 2018/19 CRL Women’s 9’s are anticipated to be the largest on record with a number of additional competitions to be announced over the coming weeks.

With the recent announcement of Women’s Tackle into the CRL Country Championships in 2019, CRL Women’s 9’s competitions across the state will be used as a selection trial for competing regional representative teams.

Country Rugby League Female Participation Officer Kylie Hilder believes the success of last year’s 9’s and the implementation of the Central Hunter Combined Women’s Competition has led to the massive increase in participating teams.

“We were expecting a good response, but to have over 80 teams express their interest is a phenomenal endorsement of both the nines format and the pathway CRL has created for women in the Central Hunter Region,” said Hilder.

“It’s great to see the Under-12’s division being introduced and it’s a great sign of the growing popularity of Women’s Rugby League at all levels.

“The addition of Women’s tackle into the Country Championships has created a representative pathway for players who participate in nines competitions to push their claims for selection in the Country Women’s National Championship side and possibly the NSW State of Origin team if they’ve got the talent and desire.”
