Country Under-16 & 18’s kick-off North Coast tour with double victories

Updated: October 3, 2018

The Country Under-16 and 18’s played the first matches of their North Coast Tour in Lismore last night, with Country recording victories over Papua New Guinea in both age-groups at Crozier Field.

Country Prop Joshua Bevan (Northern Rivers, Bilambil Terranora) scored a double for the Under-16’s in a Player’s Player Man of the Match performance that drew praise from Coach Gary Jones.

“Josh Bevan just came back from a school tour to Fiji and only got off the plane yesterday and he was by far and away our best player,” said Jones.

“He’s a big, strong front rower who looks to have a big future.”

Despite a slow start by the Under-16’s, Jones was impressed by what he saw in the second half.

“We didn’t play our best football in the first half but once we got a bit of ball we were able to capitalise on it.

“Papua New Guinea were great, they didn’t play with a lot of structure and relied on ad-lib football which made them hard to defend against. They had a few players out wide who really troubled us with their speed and footwork.”

The Country Under-18’s may have scored a comprehensive victory, but Coach Aaron Watts believed the scoreline was not an accurate reflection of the contest.

“We started a little slow, which is to be expected in our first game together, but we settled ourselves down and came up with a big performance,” said Watts.

“Our opposition were very physical and never stopped coming all night.

“They threw a lot of challenges at our defence, which fortunately we were up to, but they can certainly hold their heads high for the courageous way they play their football.”

Country’s Luke Bain received the Player’s Player award for a strong performance amongst a great team effort.

The Country Under-16 and 18’s will now take on the Gold Coast Titans on Saturday, 6th October at Ned Byrne Field, Cudgen.
