Former NRL Premiership winning Captain and Country U23’s Assistant Coach Andrew Ryan believes the opportunity for Country to take on Samoa and Scotland in October is something the players will never forget.

Speaking to crlnsw.com.au, Ryan believed taking on NRL and English Super League quality players would prove to be invaluable for the development of some of Regional New South Wales’ brightest footballing talent.

“It’s always a proud moment whenever you get to represent Country, but to take on international sides in a World Cup year is an awesome opportunity,” said Ryan.

“The rugby league pathways are always evolving and whilst it will be a tough challenge to face NRL and Super League quality players; being exposed to that level of football can only be good for your development – it’s something they’ll never forget.”

Having previously coached the Country Under-16’s on tours to New Zealand and Samoa, Ryan admitted he was enjoying being able to give back to the game in Regional NSW.

“I’ve always been proud to say that I’m from the country and it also makes me proud to see young guys from regional towns making the most of the opportunities rugby league can provide.

“It’s exciting to be involved with the Country U23’s and I’m looking forward to seeing how far these guys can take their rugby league careers.

“It’s not all about making it to the NRL. If these players can take what they learn from this experience and apply it to their own careers in their own home towns and be the best that they can be – then I’ll consider that to be a success.”

The matches against the Toa Samoa and Scotland Bravehearts will be played at Wagga Wagga’s McDonalds Park (Samoa) and Ballina’s Kingsford Smith Park (Scotland) on October 13th and 20th and will feature a range of curtain-raiser matches played on the day as part of a festival of football.

In a boost for fans outside the Riverina and North Coast, both matches will be live streamed courtesy of WaggaWagga.TV (Samoa) and Bar TV Sports (Scotland).
