History

Country Rugby League of NSW Inc was established in 1934 and in 1994 it was incorporated as Country Rugby League of NSW Inc (“CRL”). The CRL is the governing body of Rugby League competitions (Groups) played in Regional NSW, and aims to play a key role in transforming the game to become the most popular participated team sport in regional New South Wales, through strong Representative Programs and Community engagement.

The Country Rugby League has produced some of the greatest players in Rugby League history – with many named in the Rugby League Team of the Century in 2008 – and continues to produce the game’s current stars.

The CRL currently oversees over 500 clubs divided into 6 regions, this accounts for all junior and senior club level competition across regional NSW.

Over these 500 clubs, Country Rugby proudly boasts over 55,000 registered members. This number is expected to continue to grow due to the continuing dedication of the massive volunteer army.

History of the Clayton Cup

The Clayton Cup has been awarded to the best team each year in the Country Rugby League since 1937. Reub Clayton had grown up with Chris McKivat in Orange and was a famous figure in that western town as a player and administrator before Rugby League was established. He lent his support to the new code and went on to be a Vice President of the NSWRL and a member of the Country Committee, which oversaw the running of football in the bush prior to the establishment of the CRL in 1934. Clayton, who was also a successful businessman (he was a bookmaker), donated the trophy to help foster the game in rural NSW and should never be forgotten for the part he played in establishing rugby league outside Sydney. Reub Clayton died in 1947
Tweed Heads Seagulls have won the cup three times (1963, 1983, 1989) along with Cobar (1971, 1972, 1998), and five clubs have won it twice: Young (1953, 1955), Tumbarumba (1985, 1986), Forster-Tuncurry (1994, 1995) and Grafton Ghosts (2010, 2011).
